I would think her parents were trying to turn Earl into a girl’s name.

I'd assume mom gave birth early and they thought it would be funny/cute. Sort of like people who name their kids after where they were conceived.

I'd wonder if the spelling of preference were Earlie, and if this were a fem version or pet version of Earl: (I'd also thoughtfully avoid all spoken reference 'with' or 'to' time).

That her parents were drunk while naming her.

I'd also think it was kind of an ugly name. Because as a name it also sounds like it could be trying to be a nickname to Earl.

I'd think this was an attempt to use a surnamey-type name as a girls' name that didn't quite work out.
Or else she had a grandfather named Earl.
