And since I pronunce the LAH sound with an A as in "brat" (the food, not the spoiled child), it doesn't sound anything like banana (which has an A as in "attic").
I really dislike it when people pronunce it uh-LAY-nah, uh-LAA-nah (with an A as in "attic"), or uh-LAW-nah (with an AW as in "lawn"). I prefer the straight-up AH sound, as in "job."
And I prefer the spelling Alanna, but that's arbitrary.

Oh my gosh... again the accent confusion. Are you east coast?

AH in job??? Wait, maybe that's the sound I describe as "aw."
I will agree the spelling of Alanna would get me closer to saying a-lah-nah though.

Here--this might be the easiest way to clear up some conclusion. I've made a sound file of me reading out my message, being careful to enunciate the differences. Heh, very cute, thank you! I listened to it three times though and still couldn't tell the difference between your way of saying it and the one with the "lawn" sound, as you call it. I can't tell!
Don and Dawn are said the same where I grew up (Colorado by the way) and I just can't get them to make different sounds, even when I try. It's true I don't have a great ear though, I can't even tell Brit from Aussie accents, unless there is heavy use of recognizable slang words.
Craziness. It's beyond me. :P
