Is it normal to pronounce Peridot with a silent T? As far as I've been aware, the T isn't silent

I've actually never heard the T pronounced. It's my birthstone, and I've always heard it said as PER-i-doh.
I worked in a high street jewellery chain for a couple of years. We never pronounced the T.
It's a common usage, not sure why, other than that it sounds more like the French version, and the English etymology overlaps with French.
