I hate it. I've heard kids being called it, and that didn't help, which is rare. It sounds inhuman, like a corporation or a screechy mythical monster.
I can't even like it next to Gwendolyn, and I love Gwendolyn.

They weren’t just screechy. The harpies in mythology were tasked with defecating on an old man’s food every time he tried to eat because he made a god angry. They were awful on every possible level.

Well, I did say it sounds like a monster.
It'd seem better if I could connect it with music, but I can't. Someone who plays the harp is a harpist, to me. Someone who harps is a harper (aka nag or harpy).

I really don't think Harper on a boy is cruel, it is also used fairly frequently for boys in Australia. Actually most of the boy Harpers I know are older than the girls, but I know two little ones.
