[Opinions] Which way to pronounce our baby girl's name?
I posted earlier about a girl's name (thanks to everyone who replied!) My husband really likes Madeline so we are pretty positive we are going with that, since I like them all.My question is... I'm not sure if I prefer it pronounced "Mad-e-line" or "Mad-e-lyn." I think they are both pretty, so I'm wondering if anyone knows which is the correct pronunciation?I don't like the Madelyn spelling so either way we will be spelling it Madeline. We were leaning towards the "line" pronunciation but I have heard that the "lyn" pronunciation is actually the correct one to use... also our daughter's middle name is Caroline so I'm not sure if Madeline (pron. "line") is too similar sounding? Thanks a lot, I appreciate the opinions!

I say mad-e-LIEN, not mad-e-LIN.

I say MAD-uh-lyn unless I'm told that it's meant to be MAD-uh-line.DH :-)

I much, MUCH prefer mad-eh-line. That one is, I believe, the original pronounciation and pronouncing it as Madelyn came later on (someone correct me if I'm wrong).Mad-eh-line is so much prettier and classier. Mad-eh-lynn just sounds tryndee.

I don't think that Caroline being your other daughter's mn is a problem at all. I prefer Mad-e-line the lyn pronounciation. There are too many trendy names around at the moment with lyn at the end. Both pronounciations are correct to my knowledge.

I perfer Madeline (pron. Line). The other Lyn pron. makes it sound trendy and cutesy

wow...madeLINE is way to close to caroline. i think madeLYN would sound way better with caroline...just spell your own way.

I prefer the mad-ah-lyn pronounciation, to me it sounds prettier.

I believe both are correct. I think the -lyn sound is more common, though, so if you use -line (which I actually prefer) you'll likely have to correct people. :-/ You could also go with Madeleine, which sounds more like mad-eh-LEHN, I think, if you want to go with that pronunciation and want to be clearer on how you want people to say it. Not sure, though, if non-name-nerds will pick up on that so quickly, though. LOL.

I personally prefer the -lyn sound. I'm actually keeping an adorable baby girl named Madeline, pronounced Mad-a-lyn, and it works very well. Plus, since you say your other little girl is Caroline, I'm not sure I would care for the rhyming element, but at the end of the day it's your child, and you ought to use the pronunciation you like best.-Bethany

Both pronunciations are correct - but I personally think "mad-eh-line" is much more pretty and not as common as "mad-eh-lyn"...and I don't think Caroline and Madeline are too similar sounding - especially since Caroline is a mn (I take it this is for another daughter, right? It won't be Madeline Caroline? lol), it's not a problem at all...

Unless you live in France or a French-speaking area, I don't think you'll have too much of a problem. Madeline *looks* like 'LINE' and it's complementary to the way you pronounce Grace CaroLINE.There's no one correct way to pronounce a name, imo, especially a name that is as universal as Madeleine/Madeline (et al). Pronounce Madeline the way you like best. If you encounter a different pronunciation, then correct that person.

I'm not too keen on the Mad-e-LINE pronounciation. I like it Mad-e-lyn better, and it goes best with Caroline. You don't have to spell it any particular way to give it the right pronounciation. Spell it however you want to spell it.

Madeline LOOKS like mad-uh-line. Madelyn looks like mad-uh-lyn.
