I know a Marisa who's parents called her Maritza when she was younger. I associate it with Latina American heritage, so it's surprising to hear on a redhead. It's pretty but I prefer the softer sound of Marisa/Marissa.

I have a distant relative, originally from Latin America, by this name, so I mainly associate it with her. It’s fine I guess.

It's quite awkward to pronounce for me, and it reminds me of marzipan.

Was she South African? Maritz is a surname, originally Dutch and said to be a form of Mauritz (= Maurice), and very common here. I've also seen Maritza as a f given name, including a woman who started a jewellery business in the town I lived in previously, and gave it her name.
