My mom is called Darlene. I think it's sweet but dated and not in a way that will make a mainstream comeback.
The only being I've met named Darla was a chihuahua. I hesitate to like it for a human because of how well it fit.

Darla may be one that is almost, but not quite, ready for a comeback. I think it could work as a nickname for Darlene. But I'd prefer it on is own.

No, it is a name in its own right. Darlene nn Darla would be odd and unnecessary, kind of like Isabella nn Isabel.
