This is my mother in law's middle name, Darlene Lou. I prefer it as a nn for Louise or as a masculine name.

Strictly a nickname. My niece Louanne is mostly called Lou.

I love Lou. One of my best friends is called Lou - short for Louise, but always, always goes by Lou. I have good associations with it, it's kind of retro-counterculture to me. I like it for any gender.

Shirt and sweet for "Louis" the younger brother of "Louie" and probably has a little sister called "Lisa". To me, Lou is for intimate use, but yeah. Short and sweet.
