I've always loved the name Mercedes. I grew up watching old films and Mercedes McCambridge ("All the King's Men") was the first time I ran across the name as a name of a person. Mercedes Ruhl (sp?) is a more contemporary actress with the name.
I met a Maria Mercedes who goes by her mn. I smile to myself when I meet her thinking how beautiful her name is.
I don't know this Corby/Colby person. It can be difficult to disassociate a bad influence with a name, but it can be done. When Ms. Marcos became infamous in the 80's I consciously made myself not start to hate an otherwise gorgeous name like Imelda. Happily, it worked for me.
