This is not a "nature name" by origin but is instead a surname transfer. My "A Dictionary of Surnames" by Reaney & WIlson says:
"The Scottish (surname) Fawns is from the lands of Fans or Fawnes in Berwickshire"
So it was first a place name, then a surname, finally a given name in this instance.
