Thanks to Philip Pullman, people are accustomed to Lyra. Layra looks as if it should sound different - presumably Lay as in eggs. And that gives a very buttoned-up impression, stiff and snobbish. If it sounds like Lyra, then nothing is gained by tweaking the spelling.
