Having them all water-themed kind of defeats the secrecy of their mermaid identity if you ask me and can be awfully obvious.

Yeah, it would be a bit on the nose but it would explain they were raised to around water and maybe explain their quirks. I get where you're coming from though! That's why I'm still pondering on using other themes as I stated and very obvious water choices would probably be middle names. :)
