The way Ikea is pronounced normally in the USA actually does make it sound like a lot of names for girls that are popular today. I'm not surprised someone thought to use it -- but also not surprised this young woman legally changed it, as I am sure she has had to endure all sorts of rude comments about it.

I have seen the name of the Colombian airline Avianca given to girls. I am sure there are other examples of names of stores or companies given to children -- certainly brand names like Chanel, Milani, Camry, Lexus, and Aigner have been given to many girls.

I had a professor who was named Wendy because her mother saw a Wendy's advertisement while she was pregnant. I guess that's not as bad as Ikea since it's actually a real name. I don't blame her for changing it.

Did she have a brother, nicknamed Harry, whose full name was 'Harrod's'?

It’s really unfortunate. Ok the sound “Ikea” isn’t bad, but you might as well be naming your child “Cheap Furniture.” No wonder she changed her name.
