I'm reading Thomas Pynchon's
Mason & Dixon, a novel written in the style of an 18th-century epic about the astronomers who lent their names to the Mason-Dixon line here in the U.S. One of the characters is a young woman named Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness"), and I'm totally taken by it. It's obviously whimsical, but the darkness of the meaning adds gravitas. Plus, Tennie is an adorable nickname. What do you think?
