[Opinions] Re: Sequoia (male) “Seq”
in reply to a message by Zina
This is really interesting! I went to look up the meaning of Sequoia, and saw that the tree was named for Sequoyah, an Indigenous polymath admired by the man who gave the tree its genus name. According to Wikipedia Sequoyah means "there's a pig inside" and was given to Sequoyah in a mockery of his birth name (which meant "there's a bird inside") after he failed to do farm chores. What a story! The name of the tree is also apparently influenced by the Latin "sequi" ("to follow"), referring to its seeds. Cool!Sequoia Henry is handsome.

From what I could find googling...
tis s gwa = bird
tsikwâ'yä = sparrow
si'qua = hog or sometimes opossum They all seem similar to Sequoyah to me, as someone who doesn't speak Cherokee. I don't know if the original meaning is known definitively. Wikipedia says "Gi sqwa ya (there is a bird inside)" is what one of his descendants said his birth name was, while telling the story New Chloe mentioned.
