[Opinions] Opinion on Sloan/Sloane as a girl name
Sloan, or more commonly Sloane, has quickly gained popularity in the US as a feminine name. It seems to have emerged as a part of the “surnames for feminine given names” trend. The first time I was introduced to this name, it was in Eragon, being the name of the seedy town butcher. Personally, I thought it the perfect sounding name for a butcher, and a really horrid name for a little girl. Apparently it was ranked as one of the sexiest names by a survey done s few years ago. What do you think?

I have hated this name my whole life, and then I read a book by someone named Sloane Crosley, and it was probably the worst book I've ever read. So now I have doubled down on my hatred of this name. It makes me think of an unwelcome bodily fluid due to infection.

Not attractive at all. Makes me think of “Sloane rangers.”

It's fine. I like a unisex name and I don't mind the sound. I don't understand why people think it sounds so, so terrible.

Sloane (my preferred spelling) is in the category of names that I deem "power suit." To my ears, they seem out of place almost anywhere except a courtroom or boardroom. These are a handful of feminine names I consider to be part of this group:Sloan / Sloane
Greer
Veronica
Brooke
Blair
Juno
Maud / Maude
Rachael / Rachel
Gretchen

Well I think it's really awful. Slug+moan. It's just a dismal name

There is no uglier name. If I could make everyone stop using it forever I would.

I agree. Tied with Brody for names that make me vaguely nauseated.

I know somebody with the last name Sloan; I think of it as a surname. I prefer Sloan to Sloane, though my opinions are neutral.

I find it a bit slimy.. but it's okay as a name. I just think it's ugly. Nothing really wrong with it and I suppose unisex. I think of Ferris Bueller's day off. I'm not sure I'd call it sexy, but hey - to each their own. When you say it slowly, it does have that sultry sound to it. Decorated with some sass. I see why another person may see it that way.

For those curious about the survey, it was published by totalfratmove.com, and ranked Sloan as the #1 sexiest name. I’ll link the article but a fair warning: The article has sexist overtones and is definitely not anything above what you’d expect from a website called “Total Frat Move.”

LolI was gonna say something mildly offensive, but nvm. It's just a subjective article. Pretty obnoxious and frat-y.So Shelby and Reagan are sexy now. Huh, you learn something new everyday. I think a name can sound alluring, but the name doesn't make somebody such ;)

My thoughts too. Whoever wrote it is giving me creeper vibes.

Just one more lnfn. Worse then many, because of sounding a bit like slowing. I knew two sisters at school: Ruth and Eileen Sloan. There was a younger one, Fiona, whom I never met. But that just reinforces my impression of it: surname fine, given name inappropriate.

Someone here described it as beautiful like sealskin once, and I could see that. It'd be a decent selkie name. But it's only likable for humans to me in the way that it's unapologetically ugly or macabre seeming. It's slimy and abrupt and even means "raid"! I like that it's got a distinct organic weightiness to it, but calling that gravitas or dignified in the way of Joan might be a stretch...The only thing I can think of that's comparable vibewise is Fallon (80s style power girl, so if that's your idea of sexy, ok), which sounds like foul and talon but still has a more neutral "leader" meaning. Though maybe it could seem like a sleeker Harper or Ainsley. Or it's like Slade but for girls.

Sexy Sloan, lol. Sexy like a blazer with big shoulder pads.I just don't like the sound and look of it. It's very much a falling note.
It feels so much to me like the words moan and groan and slow. There's some onomatopoiea there, I think.
I feel similarly about Joan, but not as strongly because I associate Joan with names that have the Jo-n sound. The Sl- initial sound is unappealing somehow too - probably also because it's uncommon in English names, and there are word-associations.

I actually kind of like it but I cannot explain why. Still don’t think it’s sexy though. I’m not familiar with Eragon so no comment there.

Regardless of gender I hate the name. And I especially hate the trend of giving girls surnames or masculine names as first names ie James, Max, Bennett, Addison, Elliot, Wyatt, etc.And to me there is nothing sexy about the name Sloan. It sounds sloppy, boring and ugly.

I feel so sad for any little girl named any of those names

OpinionAgree with all your points.
Sloane is a ghastly thing to do to a child. There is something slithery and unpleasant about it.

I like Sloane for a girl, but ‘sexy’ is the last thing that comes to mind when I think of this name.

What comes to mind then?

Personally, I think of a tough, warrior type of girl. Like ‘Lara Croft’. But, that’s because of it’s meaning... raider. It makes me think of Tomb Raider.

Lara Croft is the last thing from sexy?
Lol, that's not what I was expecting. My image for the meaning is viking raids and not the glamorous version of vikings...I wonder if people who like Sloan would also like Valkyrie. I bet they wouldn't like Brunhilda.

I might not be explaining this right. Yes, Lara Croft is sexy, but the name Sloane isn’t. I like the name, but it kinda sounds like slug or sloth.

Yeah, I think of slugs too.
Do you like it because it sounds like slug or sloth? Would you like it if it didn't remind you of Lara Croft? Or is the contrast what appeals?

I thik it's absolutely awful, one of the ugliest-sounding girls' names, and in fact the ugliest-sounding names period. Right up there with Seth for boys. Worse even than Harper or Emma.I believe people got the idea it was sexy from the eighties movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" where Sloane was Ferris's glamorous girlfriend.

I didn’t even remember his girlfriend’s name. Interesting, I wonder if any parents credit that movie as the inspiration for naming their child Sloane.
