[Opinions] Jinx
I wanted to get some feedback on the name Jinx for my daughter. I’ve seen it used in pop culture by some really badass female characters (from Bond girls to famous actresses to comic book characters) and I think the name is powerful, pretty and unique. I wanted to get some feedback though, I’ve had some mixed reviews, some people love it, others have said it’s unlucky or that it is more of a pet name. Obviously, I personally disagree, I think it’s a gorgeous girl name and the word jinx is supposed to mean a charm, I think it gets a bad rep because of superstition. However, I want to get some more opinions to better weigh the pros and cons of the name and get a better sense of what negative things might be said about the name.
Please let me know your thoughts.

I think Jinx is a really cool sounding nickname. Maybe you could use Jacinta for a formal name?

To me Jinx sounds like the name of a cat, but I'd like it as a nickname for a human.
Basically any name that could be called Ginny could be called Jinx instead. Full name Ginny, Virginia, Ginevra, Gillian, Jillian, Jennifer, Jenny, Georgina, Ginette, Jasmine...

It gives to much character name vibes. It doesn't matter but don't like it for a child.

I’m sorry, but I don’t care for this name; I’ve only heard of “jinx” in the negative sense. As a nickname, it could be cute, though. If you did use it, there’s sure to be teasing, but she’ll be fine with confidence.

I am familiar enough with the use of Jinx as a woman's nickname that it doesn't seem odd to me. I think it actually wasn't that uncommon among the World War II generation. However, I do think this works better as a nickname than as something you actually put on the birth certificate. I would put a name like Virginia, Gina, Jeanette, Jennifer, etc. on the birth certificate and call her Jinx as a nickname. Then she can decide when she's older if she wants to continue being called Jinx or wants to use a more formal name.

Thank you for this input and for being respectful. That seems to be the consensus, that jinx as a nickname is ok but not as an official name, and I do love the name Virginia so I’ll have to ruminate on that one a bit. We’ve got other names that we really like too so we’ll have some great options when officially deciding on a name.

You, the name 'Jinx' and all those multiple one-liners from the same computer but with different pseudonyms are silly, not worth bothering about and looking for trouble.

My take is just because you like the name, doesn't mean it's a good idea. So I'd think long and hard about this one-more so than you already have already. Unique doesn't equal better (although there ARE plenty of unique and uncommon names out there that work just fine. Some even great.)
People WILL think of the word. You know, like: "Jinx, you owe me a soda!" Any character associations with it, wouldn't even cross most people's mind. My suggestion (besides really thinking about it, truly and deeply) would be to have it as a middle. But I would honestly suggest to use it for a pet or character, rather than on an actual child.

Thank you for the feedback and doing so respectfully. This is why I posted because I was having reservations about using the name. Personally, I think it’s beautiful, but if I’m the only one, that kind of defeats the purpose and sets my child up for a harder road. Just sucks cause I think it’s so pretty, really wish there wasn’t so much nonsense surrounding the name.

*rolls eyes*Bond Girls also had names like Pussy Galore and Honey Rider and Kissy Suzuki. That doesn't really say anything for the "bad-assness" of Jinx. Ditto for comic book characters.
Jinx doesn't mean a lucky charm. It means a bad omen, something that spoils things. Like saying "We've had no snow at all this winter" and then two days later you get a full-on blizzard. Of course your saying that didn't cause the blizzard but superstition is deeply engrained in all of us whether we admit it or not.The only actual celebrity I can think of whose name was Jinx was a radio and TV personality from the forties and fifties named Jinx Falkenburg. Her real name was Eugenia. It would make a cute name for a pet; in the old Freddie the Pig books by Walter R. Brooks, the black farm cat was named Jinx. Again, an association with bad luck.It could make a cute nn, for Eugenia perhaps, or Jennifer or Virginia or something like that, but it would have to come naturally and not be contrived.

While the person who decided to troll you with multiple guest accounts is ridiculously over the top, I do have to say that the idea of a real person named Jinx feels very silly to me.

I think it's a beautiful name. Don't listen to all this hateful, disrespectful drivel from these deoderantless mud gobblers - that only goes for the rude of you lot - one of my favorite animated characters is named Jinx. All love to you and your daughter, no matter what you decide to name her I would only take your inner circles opinions to heart. Sorry on behalf of the dregs in this forum for all the negativity on your post. I like the name a lot ❤️

Wow, a lot of people being really hateful. Im not a monster I just liked the name….I came here for feedback and I definitely got some lmao. I didn’t realize people would get so ugly over a name. Just thought the name sounded pretty and would be unique had plenty of people who agreed and liked it too so keep in mind that everyone has different opinions. Keep it classy people✌️
