[Opinions] Re: Spain's Top 100 (2023)
Overall, the Spanish name list focuses on trendy names (Enzo, Thiago, Gael; Noa, Triana, India) while also keeping classics used throughout the years (Manuel, Gonzalo, Nicolás; Sofía, Paula, Ana). Besides, names from Spain's co-official languages are usually present in the list, with Catalan (Marc, Biel; Laia, Ona), Basque (Iker, Julen; Leire, Ainara) and, less often, Galician (Brais, Anxo; Iria, Sabela). English (Izan, Noah, Liam; Mía, Chloe, Isabella) and Arabic (Adam, Mohamed, Amir; Nour, Yasmin, Layan) borrowings also play a major role.Spanish parents tend to choose short names, especially for girls (Leo, Marco, Pol, Nil, Aday; Lara, Zoe, Ona, Iris, Lía). There is also a trend of using short forms as full names, with Lola and Nico being the most notable examples.Lucía is the Spanish Olivia - 20 years in a row in first place. It's a beautiful name, of course, but I'm too tired of it. Thankfully it's not common in my area. And speaking of Olivia, it's #7 now. Hugo made a jump from #50 to #10 in 2002-2003 and has never left the top 10 since then.Carmen and María are the most perennial names in the girls' list, with Carmen's lowest spot being #47 and María's #16 (by decade). In fact, María del Carmen is the most common feminine name in Spain. Antonio's (most common masculine name in Spain) lowest spot was #27.-Part of these names seem to cycle fast, but some classics (Pedro, José; Laura, Daniela) need a break, in my opinion. I'm also glad there is more creativity, though. However, I consider that there are names that should be used more often, emphasising vintage gems, like Flora, Xenia, Leonor, Emilia, Angélica; Tristán, Lorenzo, Vicente, Dante, Igor...Apart from this, considering recent additions, I'm excited to see Julen, Saúl, Jan, Axel, Nil, Alonso, Fabio, Ares, Ander, Kai, Luka, Elías, Adara, Iris, Alaia, Naia, Diana, Iria, Catalina, Nour, Aurora, Violeta, Elia, Cataleya, Yasmin, Cayetana, Aya and Roma.Hope this is helpful! :)
