[Facts] Gwynplaine?

Does anybody have an etymology for the name "Gwynplaine"? It's from "The Man Who Laughs". It looks kind of faux-Welsh -- "Gwyn" meaning "white", but "plaine" isn't a Welsh word. Any ideas?
