[Opinions] What Names Would You Pick For Your Children From Your Own Generation & Region?
If you had to name your children using names that reflect your own generation and the region you grew up in, what would you choose? The key guideline is that these names should be ones that would have been familiar in your community the year you were born. They don’t have to be top-chart names, but they should be names that most people in your area would have at least heard of and occasionally seen at the time. Think “recognizable,” even if not wildly popular. But popular is acceptable too if that is your leaning. So, what are some names you might have used? What would be your girl name picks? What would be your boy name picks?I will add mine shortly. Please rate my "Names I would Use" list & "Backup Favorites" list. Feel free to rate some of my other lists too if you have the time.

I am Generation X. I would've probably chosen...Jessica
Melissa
Amy
Lisa
Michelle
Angela
JuliaDavid
Joshua
Matthew
Anthony
Andrew
Jason
I would have picked family names, probably Andrea and Etienne, or Anja and Stefan. Looking at popular names from the year I was born, I'd go with Sabrina and Florian.
At that time I would have had no access to the internet so I'd likely have picked something very common:Joanna & Daniel
Aude Estelle & Yann Anthony
While I'm not sure anyone else would recognize it (because I don't think "normal" people think about these things) I noticed that there were an unusual amount of girls named this is my area and generation:Tanis or Tannis
Charmaine
Tara
Chantal
Jaclyn (that spelling specifically)For boys we weren't so colourful, but we had a lot of Dustins, and I always thought that Dusty was a cute nickname. We also had a LOT of Jons and Johns which I think was fairly unusual by the mid 80s.So maybe I would do Tannis Chantal, Charmaine Tara, and John Dustin "Dusty".
For reference I looked at the top 100 for my state from the ssa (Is there a way to look beyond that?)Boy: Edward Vincent or Julian Isaac Girl: Diana CelesteThese ended up being less reflective of my community and more like traditional, safe picks 😅Side note: I didn't realize Hunter and Kennedy were already popular for girls on my birth year (my millennial/gen z cusper is showing lol)
Damn I didn't do mine by state, I need to revise it with that change LOL
Same, I'm a Zillenial too. I noticed some names that are currently popular in the present day were first creeping up the ranks all the way back to the year I was born. Like Sophia for instance.
Idk, it's hard to say what people as a group recognize.I made a long hypothetical list (feel free to make combos from it, anyone). I'm probably forgetting names I like and not sure what I'd realistically pick from the list right now.
60-70 from the top 500 of my birth year I'd maybe consider:Joseph, Philip, Nicholas, Adam, Bryan, George, Dominique, Benjamin, Richard, Patrick, Jason, Marcus, Timothy, Jesse, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Justin, Russell, Luke, Darius, Demetrius, Isaac, Frederick, Maurice, Omar, Harold, Bernard, Cedric, Oscar, Rafael, Ariel, Cornelius, Clay, Stefan, Alfred, Damien, Dante, Felix, Fabian, Fernando, Perry, Kendrick, Myles, Ruben, Roger, Emmanuel, Ernest, Isaiah, Andre, Antoine, Gustavo, Gabriel, Hector, Henry, Jamal, Gerald, Carl, Salvador, Jerome, Julian, Arthur, GilbertSome that I think had been used in my region by then:Conrad, Moses, Solomon, Ozias, Cyrus, Casper, Amzi, Ezekiel, Elijah, Yves, Prosper, Galen, Ezra, Denmark, Tobias, Ulysses, Balthazar, Alcide, Junius, Wendell, Aurelius, Johann, Isidore, Starling, Robin, Eagle, Meriwether, Cassius, Lazarus, Odell, Garnet, Neptune, Basil, Oberon

I relate to the community naming standards of the region. That's an impressive list line up though of different ideas
For myself, I tried to limit myself just to names that were within the top 500 the year I was born. I picked names of girls I either knew directly during that time ( that still fit the aforementioned criteria ) or just names I know would have been heard of based on the US rankings for that year. I tried to similar myself to names that weren’t just classical and never go out of style, but some are still in there due to their continued popularity for my age group and my liking. I tried to pick some that are still specific to my age group. Names that are already on my long or short list already will be * as an additional marker. But like I said, a fair number are just already on my long or short lists. Girls:
Alexandra
Alexandria
Anastasia *
Angelina
Audrey
Bridget
Cara
Caroline *
Cassie
Catherine *
Celeste
Charity
Cheyenne
Clarissa *
Claudia *
Diana *
Elisabeth *
Emily
Eva *
Francesca *
Gabrielle
Hannah
Iris *
Jada
Jillian *
Joanna *
Juliana *
Kira *
Lillian *
Lydia *
Madeline
Maggie
Marissa
Miranda
Molly *

Disregarding that it's my sister-in-law's name, if I had to name a daughter by these rules right now I'd name her Shannon. Shannon Leigh, I think.A boy would be named James Michael, same as if I wasn't folowing these rules. But if you're being stricter, I'd name him Jason Michael.
Shannon is always a nice choice though. Shannon is my step sister and my step brother's wife's name. ( two separate people just so we're clear.. lol)
Adrián, Rafael, Airam, Iván, Yeray, Gonzalo, Ángel, Hugo, Ismael, Aridane, Elías, Víctor, Oliver, Iriome, Aarón, Nauzet, Héctor, Abraham, Dailos, Gabriel, Isaac, Alexis, Darío, Joel, Israel.Celia, Alexandra, Virginia, Silvia, Jennifer, Fayna, Beatriz, Amanda, Esther, Iris, Atteneri, Tayri, Jessica, Ariadna, Lara, Desirée, Iballa, Judith, Marina, Haridian, Gara, Nayra, Lidia, Érika, Diana.
Those are all very lovely ideas
Unfortunately my birth year has a lot of names that are too tired or overused for me, so I don't have a huge draw to the sweeping majority. It took some time, but I think I found some I'm very pleased with.Christina Melanie
Kelsey Robin
Alicia HollyNicholas Joseph
Jesse Adam
Peter Joel
Any list that includes Jesse in it is a win to me.
I'd love to see Jesse make a comeback for boys!
I used the list from my birth year. I obviously loved a lot more boys names...Julia Bridget
Belinda Melanie
Tanya JacquelineAaron Stuart
Nigel Lance
Gareth Wayne
Rhys Craig (KrAYg)
Todd Brendan
Jared Duncan
I rated those lists for you. It was lovely to see Nerissa and Tabitha on there! Here's the link to my Foreign Variants list if you'd like to rate it:

I got you girl. Rated all your names. We have similar taste, I like a lot of the same. Tanya is so sweet to me. I have echolalia because of my autism... usually I mask it as an adult but when I was a teenager and sometimes used names to stem and calm myself, Tanya was one of them. It felt soothing, maternal, warm and smelling of spices to me. It was one of the names that helped me calm down when overstimulated. But I'm sure that sounds incredibly weird and odd. Oh yes I love Nerissa and Tabitha, they are some of my favorite ideas.
Out of curiosity, do you pronounce Tanya with 2 syllables or 3? For me, it's definitely 2 (tahn-YAH). The spelling Tania, on the other hand, is 3 - (tah-NEE-uh). And the first syllable is never the word "tan". I'm forever getting corrected, even by people who don't have the name, lol.
I think pronunciation can vary depending on the individual. I met a girl at college named Giovanna that pronounced it like 'Geo-vana" instead of the Italian way like jo-Van-ah. For what it's worth, I pronounce it Tahn-Yah, or for Tonya I enunciate the o a bit more in comparison.
