[Opinions] Crystal
What do you think of the name Crystal. I think its pretty. Its a shame the name is dated and tarnished by things like crystal meth. Do you think it will ever come back into use again?
The name "Crystal" itself is derived from the Greek word "krystallos," meaning "ice" or "rock crystal," according to Wikipedia.

I like the look and sound of Crystal, but I think it has too many connotations to be usable as a name.
Not my style, but it's a nice name.
I love the name Crystal! I was so disappointed when I realized it had left the top 1000. It feels like it should've been a classic, like Ruby.

I love this name. It has a retro and young feel. It will make a comeback, but in maybe 30 years since it left the Top 1000 four years ago. Krystal is my favourite spelling.
I was almost named this (with a "kre8tive" spelling) in the mid 80s. It's a nice sound, and I love crystals, so no problems there. I think I just would have been miffed at its popularity because even with the altered spelling, I would have just been one of four Crystals in class.
I don't feel the name is tarnished by crystal meth, most people just call it meth in my area. It's more tarnished by being extremely 80s, and very similar to Christine and Kristen/Kristin, which I think people are tired of at the moment. Crystal could come back, in a generation or two. Once the Crystals become grandmas and great-grandmas, the name could be appreciated again, along with other word names from that era like Amber, Brandy, and Heather.
One of Joan Crawford's famous characters from the 1939 movie "The Women" was named Crystal, so that always gave it a more retro, art deco glam appeal to me. Her Crystal was a beautiful, tough-talking, homewrecking perfume counter girl, so I think even then the name had a bit of a "trashy" label. But that doesn't bother me.

One of my favorite cousins is named Crystal. I've always thought it was a very beautiful name, it even sounds like what it means.
I don't think it'll come back anytime soon. It's one of those names that stylistically got popular before its time. If it hadn't been so popular in the seventies it would fit right in with Jade and Ruby.

I don't like jewel names in general, and Crystal pretty much falls into that category. Plus, the only Crystal I've ever known was a thoroughly unpleasant child in about Grade 3, who was academically challenged and took out her frustrations by bullying whoever crossed her path. She soon left the school and was never seen again - sad story now, but quite a relief back then.
My sister, cousins, and I used to always fight over who got this name whenever we played pretend. We eventually had to make rules that nobody got to be named Crystal because someone inevitably would always stomp away in a huff when they didn't get it. Crystal was a hot commodity in my childhood, haha.
It's kind of sad that it has developed a reputation as time has gone on. I've commonly heard it being described as "trailer-trash". I don't think Crystal deserves that, it's fairly nice and decent. The sound is modern pretty, and it evokes nice imagery when you think of it innocently and in its geological nature form.
I imagine with all the Krist- names out there, it speeds up a name's demise due to oversaturation (Christina, Krista, Kristen, etc). Crystal may have suffered this. I think it needs time to hibernate for a bit and may see a small surge in another decade or two?
I'm surprised it's no longer in the Top 1000! Dropped off in 2021 and hasn't appeared since. Crystal seems like one of those mainstays that somehow always holds on.

I've met many lovely people named Crystal. I don't think it's very "tarnished" by the term for meth.
I think it's no less likely to come back into fashion someday, than Heather or Amber is.
I think many trendy object-names get associated with a relatively lower-status demographic, and take on a "cheap" vibe.
Crystal is a lot like Ruby and Opal and Pearl, in my view. It's just that those others were popular long enough in the past, that people today don't any longer associate them as trendy "cheap" bling names. I'm 50 something and I get a slightly cheap vibe off them still, the way I do with Crystal, Brandy, Sherry, Amber. But I don't think that makes them bad.

No. It’s too out-of-fashion, and an almost archetypal name for… well I’d better not say.
A stripper?
That works.
I suppose it could come back. I almost see this as a trend name, versus a cyclical classic that may return.
My personal association with the name is the turtle I had for a time growing up that I named Crystal, so I'm not really able to assess on the merits.
I will say that, moreso than most other names that are also words, Crystal became perhaps the name with the most accepted creative spellings. I've encountered so many spellings: Cristal, Krystal, Krystle, Chrystle, Chrystal... none of them work. If the name is going to be used, then Crystal it should be.
