[Opinions] Sterna?
Ok, here’s the whole stuff. I’m a girl and an only child, so when I’ll be dead (hopefully in a looooong time lol) the only people bearing my surname will be distant cousins.
I would like to “remember” my surname in the name of one of my children. I still have plenty of time since I’m not married, but I would like to know your opinions.
I know I could give my children both names (mine and my husband’s), because some ancestors did it. But today people could think we’re divorced or not married, which would be a huge problem because I’m from a very conservative religious background.
So, my surname is Sztern, but only the “z” only came recently, as a “polonization”. Before the 1850’s the name was Stern. It means “star” in German and Yiddish.
What’s the better idea? Giving “Stern” as a middle name to one of my sons? Or, since Polish surnames can be feminised, “Sterna” to one of my daughters?
If you prefer Sterna, would you write it Sterna (simpler and the “good” spelling), or Sternah (more feminine)?
Oh yeah, Sztern and Stern are pronounced like “steak” but with “rn” instead of “k”. You can also say “shtern”, with the “e” like steak again. Not steern or sturn…

I would go with Sterna for a girl...don't use Sternah. That looks silly. I think it looks a little funny to use Stern as middle name for a boy because many people would assume you meant it as a word, in which case it would have negative associations. If you use it for a boy I would advise sticking to the current spelling and using Sztern as a middle name.
Don't use Sterna. Too artificial. Besides, it's the plural of sternum.
Just use Sztern. It doesn't matter if it's not femme; it's a surname you want carried on, why mess with it? Give her two middle names, if having just Sztern makes you squirm.
If you just want the suggestion of it carried on, the star meaning names are great.

You have a very good point here...
I think either Stern for your son or Sterna for your daughter are fine. I definitely prefer the spelling Sterna to Sternah as the h seems excessive.
if i ha to choose one of the ones above i'd probably be something that sounds like shterna
i think it great that you want to keep your name "alive" through your children. my name is also rather different you dont hear too much and my brother is the last of my family (that i know of with this name) so i figure our last name could easily come to an end in a generation or two if he doesnt have any sons
so best of luck with your quest and i hope you figure out something
