I don't see how it could have a bad meaning - amber jewellery is beautiful. (Well, it doesn't suit my colouring, but on other people it is lovely!)
It's also too established to be "hippy" imo. It might be rather dated in some places, but it's always been rare where I live, so I don't think of it that way and I like it very much :-)
