This site contains the best-researched database of name meanings and origins in English on the web. I'm not trying to be mean, but did it occur to you to check that database before spouting off meanings on a board that is supposed to be for facts?

Yes.
I assumed that this website would not be very useful when looking for meanings of Marissa because I thought that, if it was, the thread-starter would not have needed to make the thread, which is why I did not check this website.
As for the meaning I stated, I found it on another naming site I visited and thought it might be helpful to contribute it.

For future reference...
1) Many first-time (or only-time) posters with questions don't bother to check the board's database. It may be that they link to the message board instead of the main page and don't think or know to search prior to posting a question.
2) Most other name meaning sites are of questionable quality and contain some (or much) inaccurate information. BTN takes a scholarly approach to documenting name meanings. While BTN posters will sometimes engage in speculative conversation if no one knows of any etymological documentation, these discussions are typically based on Greek or Latin word roots, history, etc.

Thank you.
It's not correct.
If you click Marissa, it will lead you to Maria, which is then a form of Mary. The meaning of Mary is hotly debated - and the consenus is that it most likely does not mean Sea of Bitterness.

True, the meaning is hotly debated (see my comments for MIRIAM).
