In spite of Tolkien, this seems better as a male name to me. That's probably because my first experience of it was in a different set of fantasy novels by the author R. A. Salvatore where the hero is named Luthien and the middle book of the trilogy is called Luthien's Gamble. This is in spite of the fact that I have never read that book, because I thought the first book in the trilogy was so bad that I never even finished that one! But in spite of how awful a writer Salvatore was, he managed to cement Luthien in my mind as a male name. :) (And I also probably associate it with Luther and Lucien, which are traditionally masculine.)

Oh, God...It's the sort of thing I'd want to like, because y'know, literary characters and stuff are my thing. But if you spent all of high school being friends with a boy who was Tolkien obsessed (and more importantly, Silmarillion obsessed) to the point that he called his girlfriend Tinuviel (Tinny for short), then you might feel an indescribable rage every time you heard Luthien, too. ;)He's a nice guy, honestly, but I froth at the mouth at Tolkien names now. Ugh. Super-saturation and misery and so on and so forth.Array

I want to like it, but it just reminds me of Lithium.

I think it is lovely and a very nice Tolkien reference. I wouldn't mind it as a first name either.

Sounds like Lucien with a lisp. :-/

My first thought was also Lucien with a speech impediment. Also, I would have thought it was masculine (like Lucien) if you hadn't posted the explanation. The -ienne ending would be more feminine to me, but I guess that would make the association you have pointless. All in all, it would be a name I'd avoid, but as a MN, I guess it couldn't hurt for someone else. I'm getting much more open minded about names, especially for the middle. :)Edited to add links.

Gorgeous . . .It's beautiful enough, and not too strange, that it could actually be used as a first name imo. Luthien was an interesting character, too.As a middle name it's delightful.

It sounds like someone saying Lucien with a lisp.

It's like Lucien(ne) with a lisp. Aside from that, it's not so bad.

It makes me think of lithium, the anti-psychotic drug. Maybe not a good association?

Luthien was the Elf princess who fell inlove with the mortal Beren in J.R.R Tolkien's The Silmarillion

Oh... So it for a girl... :SIt makes me think of another name which i can't put my finger on! It's very annoying. Maybe Lucien, or Lutheran (the religion). Not sure if i like the name or not...

A little more info the name means enchantress. The name is Sidarian. Tolkin's wife Edith was the insperation for this character and Arwen and Aragorn's love sort of mirrors Beren and Luthien.
