In spite of Tolkien, this seems better as a male name to me. That's probably because my first experience of it was in a different set of fantasy novels by the author R. A. Salvatore where the hero is named Luthien and the middle book of the trilogy is called Luthien's Gamble. This is in spite of the fact that I have never read that book, because I thought the first book in the trilogy was so bad that I never even finished that one! But in spite of how awful a writer Salvatore was, he managed to cement Luthien in my mind as a male name. :) (And I also probably associate it with Luther and Lucien, which are traditionally masculine.)

But if you spent all of high school being friends with a boy who was Tolkien obsessed (and more importantly, Silmarillion obsessed) to the point that he called his girlfriend Tinuviel (Tinny for short), then you might feel an indescribable rage every time you heard Luthien, too. ;)

My first thought was also Lucien with a speech impediment. Also, I would have thought it was masculine (like Lucien) if you hadn't posted the explanation. The -ienne ending would be more feminine to me, but I guess that would make the association you have pointless. All in all, it would be a name I'd avoid, but as a MN, I guess it couldn't hurt for someone else. I'm getting much more open minded about names, especially for the middle. :)

It's beautiful enough, and not too strange, that it could actually be used as a first name imo. Luthien was an interesting character, too.

It's like Lucien(ne) with a lisp. Aside from that, it's not so bad.

It makes me think of lithium, the anti-psychotic drug. Maybe not a good association?
