A nn can be anything.

A friend name Pam is called Pete. Another friend, Brandy, is Cid or Cidney to her mom.

If you're asking if anyone could see how Caz is related to Carole, I think the answer is no.

I dislike it, personally--I love Carole either without a nickname or with Caro.

Caz sounds very Australian to me, for what it's worth--that's a neutral point with me, but it's definitely what I think of first.
