Help[Opinions] WDYTO Elphaba?
I know that people who know Wicked the musical will automatically think of that (Which is actually where I got it from) but the more I think about it, the more I actually love this name.....Grace Elphaba, Elphaba Theresa, Alyson Grace Elphaba....I also like Glinda or Galinda from Wicked....Galinda Rae, Galinda Rose, Galinda Mary, Galinda Christine....the last name from wicked I love is Vanessa Rose nn Nessa Rose or Nessa. WDYT? Please don't be too harsh but let me know what you think :)

there was an Elphaba thread way back when. I wouldn't use it myself, but I really like it. I like the sound of it more than the spelling, so perhaps Elfaba or Aelfaba (if you've read the book you will remember the original spelling, of course!) would work better. and I love how her dad called her Fabala...I think that is such a cute nn.

Elphaba sounds like alphabet and looks like elephant. I really don't care for it.

It sounds like elephant. Not good. I don't like it at all. Galinda/Glinda is much better, but I think of the Wizard of Oz.

While I am a Wicked fan, I really don't like the name Elphaba. It just sounds unattractive to me.
Galinda is pretty (I prefer it over Glinda), but it sort of self-contracts into Glinda when you say it anyway (or at least when *I* say it). I also like Galina.
I think Vanessa/ Nessa Rose is lovely, and definitely the most attractive one to me.

Mixed emotions . . .
I love the musical, and while Elphaba is a sympathetic character in it, I think it's unwise to forget that she is, after all, the Wicked Witch. This would bother me more than just the Wicked association. I am open to creative MNs, and in and of itself, Elphaba is comprised of lovely sounds. I just have a hard time with the idea of saddling a girl with the name of a witch who gets so slighted and jealous that she commits her life to evil, in a nutshell. Her soul is so impure pure water will melt her, remember?
ETA: Galinda / Glinda doesn't really have the same appeal to me because I picture her as somewhat of a bubble head, like the original sorority ditz. Her voice style and characterization in both shows is annoying to me, so I wouldn't use it. The sounds, again, are nice enough, though.
I like Vanessa, but it's not something I'd use. Rose seems like a filler MN. If I had to pick from all these, I would consider Nessa Rose as a double FN. She's more of an obscure homage that most people will not have preconceived notions about, and as a character, she's not remarkably good or bad, so no worries. As names, they're pretty sounding, too.

Elphaba nn Elphie seems like a guilty pleasure. I like it a lot. It sounds like a trendy old 19th century name. Do you know if it has a meaning in any language? I can't say I care for Glinda / Galinda, and Nessa is okay but nms.

I do not like Elphaba at all, I mean it was great for the musical and book but not so much as a real name.
You do know that this name was created from the initials of L. Frank Baum who wrote the Wizard of Oz book? El-Pha-Ba (L. F. B.)
I just think it is too recognizable as a musical character to be a real name. Glinda/Galinda and Nessa might not be so bad but I'd really caution against using Elphaba.

I can't possibly villanize you for loving names from a pop culture source, so don't worry, no harshness here. ;) Otherwise I'd have to give up Evey, Valerie, Susan, Ruth, Mercedes, Scarlet Carson, and quite a few others. (I made a list of names I like with connections to V for Vendetta, and it's twenty strong already, lol.)

There's nothing wrong with that (and plenty right with it, IMO), but it's something to keep in mind.

I love Elphaba! I also like nn Elphie, for a younger girl. If you thought that the Wicked connection would be a problem, you could at least use it as a mn. I like Galinda over Glinda, and your combo Galinda Christine is lovely.
