Elgin is a suburb of Chicago. It's also a Scottish noble family and various other towns here and there. The family seems to be pronounced with a hard G, the suburb with a soft G.

Well, maybe it's in relation to the suburb then, Ameryn goes to school in Chicago, so she may have relatives there...I thought it odd, too
