[Opinions] Re: Lara.
in reply to a message by Haven
I like Laura a lot, but don't like the spelling Lara at all. I assume you want to pronounce Lara like Laura? Rather than rhyming it with Sarah?People will just naturally assume it's Laura, and having to spell it all the time will get old fast.I also have negative associations with Lara. There was this girl I went to school with named Lara. She wore lots of sleeveless tops and her armpits had a FOREST of red hair in them. She shaved her legs but not those, I wondered why, but it looked horrible. She had more hair under her arms than most men have on theirs. SHe also had terrible BO.There's also Lara Logan on CBS news, whose accent is very annoying to me, even though I usually really like listening to British accents. Call me a nut. :)Laura does go very nicely with your other names. As to using your niece's names... better not. You really couldn't use one girl's name without the other demanding to have their names used too. Best not to borrow any more trouble than necessary.

Lara can rhyme with Sarah...?Is Sarah pronounced differently in the US? Over here, Sarah is "SARE-ruh", and Lara "LAH-ruh".Also, is Lara often used as a alternative spelling of Laura? Over here, they're two different names.

Laura is pro. a bit differently in some areas. My SIL has a sister named Laura, and it is pro. LAH-ruh. The rest of the time it is pronounced lor-A (that's the best I can do.) Lara is pronounced a few different ways here - lare-a and LAH-ruh. I actually prefer the first one because it's what I'm used to. A good example of Laura being pronounced LAH-ruh is in Sleeping With the Enemy

I assume the Lara rhymes with Sarah because of the actress Lara Flynn Boyle; she was the first way I'd heard the name prn, so it stuck with me. Also, you know me and my phonetics; I'd instinctively prn Lara like Sarah anyway because of the lack of U.
