[Opinions] Hilaire
I mentioned to RoxStar how much I love Hilaire Belloc's poetry over on the Lounge, and it got me thinking about his name. I'd never use it as a first name--the hilarious and hilarity jokes would be tiresome, as would the confusion with the name Hilary--but I think it's really handsome as a middle name.WDYT? At the moment, Edmond Hilaire just looks so handsome to me. I realize that it's basically the French form of Edmund Hillary's name, but I can't get over how snazzy it is, alas. Array

I think it's a great combo. Pairing the more feminine sounding mn with the more masculine fn is a fabulous idea. Also, Hilaire as a mn makes the misspellings less likely, and I'd doubt a lot of people (tho I'm sure some since you saw it) would think about Edmund Hilary.

I think it's very handsome, and considering I didn't even know who Edmund Hillary was until I just searched it on Wikipedia (::blushes::), I wouldn't have made that assocation at all.So yeah, I say thumbs up to Edmond Hilaire.

If it's pronounced Hilaire (Hil-air) and not Hilary I like it a lot. And I agree with you, Edmond Hilaire is very snazzy!
I also prefer Edmond Hilaire to Edmund Hillary.

I like it.Edmond Hilaire is a bit too upper-class, lordly for me. However, it's a very cool, handsome name. Plus: He'd have a great namesake. :-D

The name is Hilaire. It's the French form of Hilarius. It is not pronounced the same way as Hilary, and it's not spelled Hilarie.Array

I meant to spell it Hilaire, forgive me [m]is it pronounced hill'air? i don't think people would pronounce it right in general so be prepared if you use it. I really didn't mean to spell it Hilarie, I guess i mixed up the letters, i usually do that for some odd reason. I felt you needn't be a rude (maybe you weren't but to me the tone of the message was, but then again i am very sensitive to things) about it though i made a mistake, i didn't mean to.

I don't feel that Array was rude, I read it as exasperation for a continuing set of mistakes and/or irrelevances on your part. The tone wasn't congenial but in my opinion that was justified.

I agree it's too bad you couldn't use it as a first name as my first impression was that Hilaire was a very handsome name. *sigh* Stupid Americans, anyway, right? :o) (j/k, btw)And despite the fact that Edmond Hilaire is another form of Edmund Hillary, well, I've always thought he had a great name, so I don't think it should deter you. There's always Raymond Hilaire (although IIRC, you'd prefer Ray as a mn).

Edmond Hilaire is quite snazzy, but I worry that since Hilary / Hillary has gone to the girls that it would be ruined, even in the French form.
