I just heard this name for the first time, too, but on the Baby Name Wizard blog, not on a person. I think it should be pronounced YAIR-uh. Is that how the girl you met pronounced it? I prefer it on a boy, but only because it reminds me of the male Jorma (YOR-muh) I know.
