Usually, I dislike using surnames as first names unless they relate to actual surnames in the child's ancestry.
I also dislike using surnames such as
Tyler or
Porter because they're occupational, and the kid so named probably won't be a tiler or a porter!
But although
Palmer means a person who returned from the Crusades with a palm branch, it can be interpreted nore widely as "pilgrim" so it actually gets my vote as a first name!
It's very pleasant-sounding.
