I adore the Italian Gilda with a hard g... so who am I to diss Gila, which looks and sounds much more mainstream?
That said, I would have assumed it was geel-ah (soft g) upon seeing it. I also would have mentally sung "Hava-Nagila"... which is now stuck in my head.
I much prefer Gili.
If you like the soft-g sound... Gil is actually a cool name for a boy, and it means "joy" to boot.
