Most likely the mother’s maiden name. I think May feminizes it and it sounds pretty. Even if it weren’t fem and frilly, I love the southern tradition of using the mother’s maiden name or a family last name as a first name.

It's not her maiden name. I'm not even sure it's a family name.

Ah ok when you said southern US I immediately came to that conclusion since Mayfair is a surname.
