As I recall the Norwegians called her Reet, which might be the Norwegian word for wreath or might just have been pa's interpretation of what he was told.Spot is kind of original for a cow, more so than Bessie or Bossy.

I think it was Wreath, but it sounded like "Reet" with their accent.Spot is a stupid name for a cow, say I. And I am always right.

They did pretty good with their other animals: Sam and David, the horses, Ellen a later cow, Black Susan the cat.
Now, much as I love Almanzo, I have to say his beautiful horses, Prince and Lady, had fairly predictable horse names.

Prince and Lady sound more like dog names to me.Sam and David oddly work for horses. And you forgot Jack, the bulldog.

But Jack is pretty predictable for a dog.
