They did pretty good with their other animals: Sam and David, the horses, Ellen a later cow, Black Susan the cat.
Now, much as I love Almanzo, I have to say his beautiful horses, Prince and Lady, had fairly predictable horse names.

Prince and Lady sound more like dog names to me.Sam and David oddly work for horses. And you forgot Jack, the bulldog.

But Jack is pretty predictable for a dog.
