Meaning & History
Either derived from Norse agn "bait" or from the male given name Agne (see the user submitted name Agni). The place was mentioned in the 'Ynglinga saga' (c. 1225) by Icelandic skald Snorri Sturluson as the location where legendary Swedish king Agne was killed by his wife. Agne is said to be buried in a burial mound just outside of Stockholm.
