Means "beyond the river Oxus", derived from Greek ὑπέρ (hyper) meaning "over, above, beyond" combined with the Greek noun Ὦξος (Oxos) meaning "Oxus". Also compare the Greek adjective ὑπέροξυς (hyperoxys) meaning "very acute, very sharp".This is the ancient Greek name for a historical region in Central Asia, which is known as TRANSOXIANA in English.
