Meaning & History

From Greek παν (pan) "all" and δαιμόνιον (daimónion) "little spirit, little demon" or only δαιμον (daímōn) "demon, evil spirit" with a suffix. This is the name of the capital of hell used by John Milton in his book Paradise Lost. It is now used as an English word for disorder or chaos.
