From Thai พัทยา (Phattaya) itself from a shortened form of ทัพพระยา (thap Phraya) meaning "army of the Phraya", referring to King Taksin. The name originally referred to the spot where Taksin (also known as Phraya Tak) and his troops confronted the local leader of what is now Pattaya during the former's march from Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi. This is the name of a resort city in Thailand.
