Meaning & History

A small hamlet in North-East Scotland, now encompassed by the city of Aberdeen. There are several explanations as to the origin of the name of this small settlement:

The most likely explanation is that it is derived from the Gaelic phreaslach, meaning 'shrub'. Early attestations of the name seem to support this.

Another is that it is from a Pictish cognate of the above origin (c.f Welsh phrysglwyn, 'bush, thicket').

Persley, like several other locations in Scotland, could be of Old Norse origin. The name could be derived from prestr, meaning 'priest' and leid, meaning 'path'.
