Meaning & History

Overseas territory of the Netherlands. The capital of Saba is The Bottom. There are four settlements on Saba: The Bottom, Windwardside, Zion's Hill, And St. John. Saba is thought to have been inhabited by Taino peoples since 1100 BC, and the Arawak people of Brazil are thought to have settled on the island at around 800 AD. Christopher Columbus is thought to have seen the island in 1493, but never landed as he was repelled by the island's perilous shores, although in 1632, a group of shipwrecked Englishmen landed on Saba. In the 1640's a group of families was set over to settle on the island by the Dutch West India Company. The current population of Saba as of the 2022 census is 1,911.
