Meaning & History

Compound from szent (saint) and Endre.
According to a Pannonian legend, the name was consecrate to the Pannonian bishop Saint Andreanus.
Another legends states that after Andrew I of Hungary came back to Hungary after his exile in Russia he estabilished a monastery around 1056 in Visegrád, which he named in honor of Andrew the Apostle, who is the patron saint of Russia.
The real reason behind the city's name is unknown.
