Meaning & History
Derived from Old Norse víðr "wide, extensive" and blár "blue, dark, livid" (the colour used to describe corpses and bruises, e.g. hel-blár "black as death"; compare Bláinn). This is the name of the third heaven in Norse mythology, the home of the light elves. Gimlé, the place where Norse mythology says humans will live after Ragnarǫk, is found here.
