Meaning & History

This is the name of several towns in Japan. The first one (愛川) is located in Kanagawa Prefecture in eastern Japan, the second one (合川), located in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan, was merged with other towns to form the city of Kitaakita. The third one (相川) was used on several towns across Japan.

The kanji used for all of these are 愛 (ai, ito.shii, o.shimu, kana.shii, mana, me.deru) meaning "affection, favourite, love", 合 (gou, ga', ka', a.u, -a.u, a.i, ai-, -a.i, ai, a.wasu, a.waseru, -a.waseru) meaning "fit, suit, join, gō (unit of area & volume - equal to 0.3306 m² in area & 0.1809 liters in volume)", 相 (sou, shou, ai-) meaning "inter-, mutual, together, each other, minister of state, councillor, aspect, phase, physiognomy" and 川 (sen, kawa) meaning "river, stream."
