Meaning & History

This is the name of a city, known for Imari porcelain (even though it's actually made in nearby Arita) and for Imari pears, which is located in Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyūshū in south-western Japan.

The kanji used for this are 伊 (i, kare) meaning "Italy, that one", 万 (ban, man, yorozu, ma) meaning "ten thousand/10,000" and 里 (ri, sato) meaning "league, parent's home, ri (unit of distance - equal to 3.927 km), village."
