Meaning & History

The former name of a village in southeastern France, now called La Salette-Fallavaux, which was the location of an 1846 Marian apparition reported by two children. Situated in the mountains above the village is the sanctuary of Our Lady of La Salette, a well-known pilgrimage site.

The place name Salette dates back to at least 1696 and appears to have originated from the surname of a local gentleman. According to academics, the surname Salette is derived from Middle High German and Old High German sal, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *salaz- or *saliz- or *salą meaning "hall; large room".
