Of unclear origin, possibly from the Thai phrase พร้าวลอย (phrao loi) meaning "floating coconut" or "coconut washed ashore", a reference to the many coconuts once found along the shores of the region. Alternatively, it may have been derived from Malay peroleh meaning "acquire, obtain", from the name of a possibly extinct tree, from dialectal Malay perelus meaning "foot falling into a crack" (so named for parts of the land covered in mud), or from French perlite referring to a type of stone. This is the name of a state in northern Malaysia.
