Meaning & History
The name of various places in northern France, derived from Latin Floriacum, the name of a Gallo-Roman estate which was composed of the personal name Florus and the locative suffix -acum. The name Florus was borne by a 3rd-century saint martyred in Nicomedia under the emperor Decius, with Lucianus and others; there seems to have been some confusion with a Germanic personal name composed of the elements hlud "fame" and ric "power" (see Chlodoric).
